Working with a Pendulum

Pendulums are an amazing tool to help you connect with your Higher Self, your spirit guides, and loved ones who have passed on. Pendulum work is considered a form of “divination” and is in the family of dowsing. Working with pendulums strengthens your connection and trust with yourself. As with everything, it is simply a tool to assist you on your path, but you should never rely on it to provide you with every answer you are seeking. When we use these tools out of desperation, neediness, or we become to reliant on them, they become a crutch and will eventually cease to provide the clarity we are seeking.

At the core of you, you are energy that is connected to all the knowledge in the Universe and Source/God/The Divine. When you work with a pendulum, you are a conduit for the energy that propels the pendulum to respond in a certain way. There are best practices to have when working with any divination tool, which are ensuring you set intentions to connect with only beings of love and light, and also regular cleansing and clearing of you, your pendulum, and your space. These practices ensure you are safe, protected, and receiving clear and accurate responses.

When you shop for a pendulum, follow what you are drawn to and guided to. Most pendulums are made out of stones or metal and there are differences between them. Stones will hold more energy, which means they can be more powerful but also will need to be cleansed and cleared more often. A pendulum with a point is helpful if you plan to use your chart beyond yes/no answers. The point at the end helps to delineate which letter on a letter chart it is attempting to show you. You can even ask the pendulum if it is the right one for you. Most “yes” responses are the pendulum swinging up and down. Most “no” responses are the pendulum swinging left and right. Once you have found a pendulum you like, you want to establish a bond and connection with it. Carry it with you during the day, sleep with it at night, and even meditate with it. This strengthens your connection further allowing clearer, more concise answers to come through.

To start working with your pendulum, ask it to show you your yes, then to show you your no. Those are the basics to start with. Once you move past yes/no answers, you can move to a letter chart which can spell out words and sentences to you. Many metaphysical and spiritual shops carry letter charts and you can also find them online. I made my own, which will be at the bottom of this post so you can save and print for your personal use if you’d like. The chart takes time to get used to and I recommend practicing by telling the pendulum to go to each letter individually so you can get used to what it feels like when the pendulum moves to each letter. When you command the pendulum to do something, you can say it verbally or in your head, either is fine, just make sure your intention is there. After practicing letters, you can have is spell out your name and other random words to see how it feels to move to each letter. Then you can begin to ask the pendulum questions you know the answer to, like “what town do I live in?” and watch and feel as it moves to the letters. This acclimates you to how it feels in your hand and helps you feel that “pull” to a letter. You can then eventually work towards phrases and sentences. Be patient and take time with your pendulum.

Ways to cleanse and clear your pendulum:
1. Smoke – palo santo or sage and allow the smoke to flow over all areas of your pendulum
2. Earthing – place it on the ground outside, or near rocks or trees
3. Moonlight – place it outside weather permitting, or on a well lit windowsill overnight
4. Sunlight – place it outside weather permitting, or on a well lit windowsill during the day (double check the stone is safe to place in sun and won’t degrade it)
5. Sea salt – place your pendulum in a basin of sea salt for 24 hours, placing it in the sunlight or moonlight will apply this cleanse
6. Intention – ask your pendulum to clear itself of any stagnant energies and be an open clear channel for your session

A few important notes about working with pendulums:
1. Properly cleanse and clear your pendulum regularly to ensure accuracy
2. Be in a good space mentally, physically, emotionally – your energy will affect your pendulum and you may get weak or no answers if you are not in a good space at that particular time

Here is a video tutorial from a fellow QHHT Practitioner who created the “TAUK” (The Art of Universal Knowing) method of using a pendulum. It’s very helpful and will further assist you in your pursuit of dowsing! How to Channel with a Pendulum
